fake ranges fake rage, faker, it seems, then fake news. but it's just me. good night. >> i'm kimberly guilfoyle along with juan williams, eric bolling, dana perino, and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five" ." today president trump addressed the firestorm that has erupted following the departure of his national security advisor, mike flynn. the president asked for general flynn's regulation due to an eroding level of trust according to the white house. but he defended his former aide earlier and blamed illegal intelligent leaks for bringing flynn down. >> michael flynn, general flynn, is a wonderful man. i think he's been treated very, very unfairly by the media, as i

call it, the fake media in many cases. i think it's really a sad thing that he was treated so badly. i think in addition to that, from intelligence, papers are being leaked. things are being leaked. it's criminal action, criminal act, and it's been going on for a long time. before me, but now it's really going on. people are trying to cover up for a terrible loss that the democrats had under hillary clinton. i think it's very, very unfair what's happened to general flynn, the way he was treated and the documents and papers that were illegally. i stress that, illegally leaked. very, very unfair. >> kimberly: very strong statement coming from the president, the commander-in-chief, in defense of his friend, someone who was loyal to him from the beginning. general michael flynn. eric, if you take these two statements, the one red yesterday that was prepared and

sean spicer was reading it. and the juxtaposition with these words that the president had today. >> eric: i don't think -- i am hearing how can you justify this? how can they say this? i think what president trump was talking about right there, and i could be wrong, what's going on surrounding the general flynn resignation. clearly he asked for the resignation but that doesn't mean, president trump can't say the way he's been treated is unfairly by the press. those are both true. he was asked to step down because of what he did with vice president pence. he went on the sunday shows and talked about speaking to flynn and flynn giving him his word that he hadn't spoken with the russians. later to find out that there may be some, i don't know, nine sources by "the washington post" and others saying it happened. he asks for the resignation, still its all day long. "the new york times" piece today was very, very long and everyone is referring

"the new york times" piece and the taking down a flynn. but i read this three separate times. i read a taking down of flynn and then saying in the piece, the officials interviewed in recent weeks that they have no evidence of such cooperation with the white house. then i heard a taking down a paul manafort and they walked about a little bit back. not charged with any crimes and then i saw one about the dossier they allegedly had on donald trump, the russians, and they said they can't confirm any of those either. extensive peace and a lot of allegation and no, and this is important, no sources named. >> kimberly: it's pretty unbelievable but this is a comprehensive piece to go through it and lay out the whole story in the scenario, and there's a lot of moving parts. what's your take away today at this point after hearing all of it and reading these pieces? >> dana: i thought where they left the store yesterday was the best place that the president,

after the resignation, you can't trust the national security advisor, if there is a trust problem within the west wing, it's going to continue to be a problem. i thought they acted decisively, even if it was a couple weeks late. they get it done. that's the story of the day. by reopening the issue again in this way, which is basically picking up the scab, it's okay but what was the worst part for you, mr. president? the eroding trust for the fact of the intelligence community was going after him they be in an inappropriate way. if they hadn't gone after him but you knew this other information, with the trust have been eroded? i think they're going to have another day's worth or maybe the next few days, they're going to have to grin and bear it with this story because it's not going to end. the other thing i would say it's there so much we don't know. i think there is no in saying i

don't know if you are speaking for the president or even the president. i don't know how much he knows. all this information coming out from different sources and that's a little bit unnerving but especially if you are speaking for the president and you are not the president. you don't have access to all the information that the justice department or fbi has. there is no shame in saying i don't know because if you say something today that turns out to be wrong three days from now, you're going to have to revisit it all again. i would tap the brakes, slow down, and not try to answer everything. >> kimberly: what do you make of the comments, greg, the president's defense of flynn and the focus on the intelligence leaks? >> greg: i would like to address the people that are worried that this is going to be something really big and that trump is going to be done. he's been done more times than the average porn star. he was done after mccain, he was done after the reporter

mockery, the hot mike on the bu bus. everybody's got to calm down. let's not forget how the dems and the media played down president obama's hot mic moments. he said, don't worry after the election, we'll deal with it. that seems worse than this prayer let's not forget ted kennedy, who plodded with the kgb to prevent ronald reagan frm becoming president. he had contacts with russians back when the russians were really the bad guys. when it was the ussr, when they were communists. i don't remember an activist left-wing media blowing their minds over that. the one thing trump is known for saying you are fired. there's one thing he didn't do enough of, and that is firing. he didn't drain the swamp and now the swamp is trying to drain him. you have these obama loyalists, intelligent people that are there that are trying to bring him down because they happen to

still be there. they are still there. he probably needs to stop hiring the omarosas and start hiring the loyalists from the past. >> kimberly: obviously a lot of reading material today, which i know you did prove what do you think about how this was handled when you look at the past 24 hours, the genesis of this and now the aftermath. >> juan: there are a couple questions about the handling. the number one question raised today, did these intelligence agencies have a court order when they in fact were conducting the surveillance? normally if you are an american on the phone line even if you are talking to a foreign official, you are protected by intelligence agencies. that was not the case here. what was going on? why were they looking at his conversations? it's obvious i think it's tied into the question of whether or not russia was interfering in

the campaign, the election season. eric, i think that's where "the new york times" was saying it's not just flynn. it is carter page, roger stone, people associated with trump who were in constant contact with russian intelligence officials during the course -- >> eric: the officials interviewed in recent weeks so they had no evidence of such cooperation, quoting "the new york times" ." roger stone wasn't part of the campaign. >> juan: roger stone was very much a part at one point but he's clearly an associate of donald trump. i think right now the big problem for trump is come i listen to you, seems like calm down. but i'm going to tell you something, i see republicans right now, mitch mcconnell the senate majority leader saying we're going to have a deep, real investigation by a senate that's led a majority by republicans into what happens with the russians in the campaign. you see roy blunt of missouri.

in addition, people say john mccain, lindsey graham but now there's a good group of republicans who are saying something is wrong here and we're not going to get our she was messed up by what trump is up to. before andrew mccarthy had a great piece today. he says if you release the tape of the phone conversation, it ends it. if the phone conversation shows flynn talked about sanctions, then it was good that flynn got fired. if you listen to the phone call and you find out that there is nothing there, then you realize there's nothing there. >> kimberly: whether it is a quick sentence or pages, the fbi investigated and didn't find evidence of wrongdoing. >> eric: i don't think even that is the reason he got fired. i honestly think, even if they did find there was a discussion with the russians and it may -- >> kimberly: it doesn't violate the logan act. the trust issue.

♪ >> eric: back to the presidents outrage over the leaks coming out of u.s. intelligence including ones he says brought down his former national security advisor, general mike flynn. are the leaks illegal, as mr. trump believes? let's bring in catherine herridge. tell us about the leaks. what are the latest on the leaks? >> well, a bunch of names articulated in washington based on access to the intelligence because so-called transcript are highly structured and also based

on the lakers possible motivation. we are contacting former intelligence obama administration officials before reporting anything further. writing in a tweet today, president trump said the real scandal here is "the real scandal here is that classified information is illegally given out by "intelligence" like candy. very un-american!" the transcripts with the russian ambassador are problematic from a legal point of view and intelligence point of view because there are special protections to shield americans when the intelligence community picks up conversations while monitoring a foreign national is a target. identifying the american caller would've -- the calls were made in december. revealing hally classified restricted intelligence is a violation of multiple criminal statutes according to a former justice berman official. >> the information that was leaked is among the most sensitive, classified information the united states

government possession. this is information that any national security official who ran across this or touched it would instantly know that this is not meant for public distribution. >> the ranking democrat on the senate intelligence committee told shepard smith this afternoon that he does expect to get a classified briefing unlikely to those transcripts at any time. >> eric: thank you, katherine harris prayed the president calls the flynn leaks a criminal act. steve king describes it as a political assassination. >> what troubles me is let's say there are people within the intelligence committee that disagree with president trump that don't want to see his administration succeed. that is part of the configuration of the leaks. in general flynn has been subject to a political assassination here regardless of what he did or didn't say to president trump or vice president pence. >> eric: the trump administration needs to not get too far out over their skis on this in case there is some

information. >> for sure, and don't fall for the trap. they want the president to make some kind of statement to suggest he's trying to your fear with an investigation. it's admirable he wants to be loyal and defend mike flynn but at the same time there's a lot at stake and there is an investigation. thus far the investigation that started under president obama and with comey, that found no evidence of wrongdoing. it's pretty incredible they ranked these lengths to be able to access and listening on this. it suggests such politicalization of the intelligence community, making, really trying to, it looks like they are trying to to go aftere side in particular in order to the benefit of hillary clinton and her candidacy. >> eric: "the washington post" publishers

publishes a piece on thursday. with nine sources. nine separate leaks? >> dana: i don't know. nine is not like, you are not saying a few sources. you have nine sources. that is significant. >> greg: may be german for noel. there were no sources. >> kimberly: nein. so many things in life are a misunderstanding. if only they had rosetta stone. >> eric: trump needs to plug the leaks. >> greg: the question is, how many civil servants are leftovers from the old boss that are still there? i think there are three forces here. the intel leftovers that are still there, the media, and trump who made the mistake of not forcefully coming out against putin when he had the chance. that lends the appearance that the other two groups going after

them have some evidence, which they don't. there is no evidence there was collusion. because trump was so magnanimou magnanimous, that didn't help trump. if you follow that. >> eric: talking about the leaks and we are not talking about some other important -- i'm guessing the russian spy ship off the coast, nato. trump administration pushing back against nato allies but we are not talking about those things but we are talking about leaks. >> juan: if you are a trump supporter, what i've seen in the polls, if you are saying why aren't we talking about tax cuts? why are we talking about obamacare, things that affect my family? instead there's all this, what i think of as chaos and backstabbing. greg, i think there is more backstabbing going on right now. i think it's obvious among trump people inside that very tight

circle. >> greg: there is not a centralized power. >> dana: might be surprised were some of the leaks are coming from. >> juan: yes. i will say this, to add to our conversation, part of what the intelligence people are looking into that's not going to make everybody so comfortable is trump. what did he know? exactly what did he possibly tell general flynn to do in those conversations when it came to the sanctions issue? obama puts in place for sanctions. the russians for some reason don't respond. totally out of the ordinary. i think that triggered in the intelligence community a sense of pay, something is up. the question becomes when did trump know it and why did trump trump -- >> eric: the same thing greg pointed out. there was a tape of president obama saying after the election there will be a lot more leeway. >> juan: that's basic

during the past administration but earlier netanyahu voiced confidence that our alliance will grow stronger during the trump administration. president trump was asked if he would seek a two-state solution in the middle east. that is the long-standing position of the united states and here is what he and prime minister benjamin netanyahu had to say. >> i'm looking at two state and one state and i like the one that both parties like. i thought for a while that the two state looked like the easier of the tube it honestly if bibi and the palestinians, israel and the palestinians are happy, i'm happy with the one they like the best. >> it is the label. what do we mean by two states? i told you what are the conditions i believe are necessary for an agreement. it is the recognition of the jew's jewish state and it's israel's control of the entire area. >> dana: you been covering

washington, and i thought it was the clinton administration but it might've been earlier paid the two-state solution saying that israel and the palestinians would have to state living side-by-side. establish foreign policy for long time but i could be changing, and what you think the consequence are? puzder we don't know. we don't know what the change would be too. what we do know is that the two-state solution something of the palestinians and the israelis have bought into in the past, so with the united states they are saying we can negotiate this deal. we will figure out how to make everything fit into the framework, you understood the game but now president trump is saying let's look for some possible arc turn of events. he is saying he is willing to look elsewhere. it's such a volatile situation that lets you do away with that, like saying we might move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem, that is going to antagonize the palestinians and so many in the world and it might make a deal more difficult. >> dana: i wonder if some people think that the stalemate

has been going on for so long that to put some uncertainty or be willing to change it up might actually lead to a solution. >> eric: i've been listening to this all day in the left is going bonkers. for 20 years, whatever, 30 years we've had kind of an agreement pushing towards a two-state solution. president trump just blew 12 years, whatever it was, of foreign policy out of the water. what i heard was him saying whatever the two groups, whatever the palestinians and a israelis come up with how he will support it. he will help facilitate whatever the solution is. i don't think that was the most intriguing thing -- look it was a great relationship. you see two good friends, two great allies pray that will remain and that's important. the moment when trump turns and says i don't know. let's slow down. netanyahu was saying hold on. i'm not sure we are ready to agree to that, that was a powerful moment but what it showed me was donald trump was elected for being that guy the podium.

israel, the arab states, but i think it's vitally important for america. >> dana: we didn't hear what that would entail. part of the interesting dynamic today was that they held a press conference before they had their meeting come out so we don't know exactly what was discussed. what do you think about that stance on iran? >> greg: it is the testosterone summit. it is the equivalent of hitler and stalin giving up poland. they see two guys in the room and they say oh, my god. we need a beta male. israel is a mini america stuck in the world's most unstable arena, and yet somehow it is safe. that is because they accept the factual reality over emotions. everyone knows the enemy and they know how to defend themselves. they know how to use weapons. muslims actually like working and living in israel. if you ask probably a muslim

where would you rather love, yemen or israel? where would you like your family to relocate? they would say israel in no time. >> dana: may be privately but publicly -- >> kimberly: they want to be safe. >> dana: there is no such place. >> kimberly: i think if you are the palestinians you are very worried because they have really enjoyed over the years a tremendous amount of money, u.s. taxpayer money, coming their way from previous administrations they have to be a little bit concerned. when i saw there was a little bit of a nice romance. they respect each other. netanyahu was quite complementary to president trump. making it clear as rail had no better friend, had not been supported like they feel they are being supported by president trump and he also verbally and rhetorically reciprocated the level of trust and support and loyalty. this was a very favorable day for the administration in terms of those two world leaders that

rattling our door. we are dealing with a lot of russian influence things going on. >> juan: maybe it's exactly the time. dana, paul ryan has said that to ensure there is no misunderstanding, congress is willing to codify the sanctions that were put in place against russia. is that a good move? >> dana: depends on what the facts are. it could be. depends also on what president trump wants to do and i think rex tillerson, the secretary of state, has only been on the job for a week. let's give him half a minute to decide what he thinks the best posture is, and also general's b-17. i think his influence will be important. now you need to get general harward in place as the national security advisor. there's a lot to be decided. on the russian ship off the coast, that's an easy one for president trump to be able to push back on the russians and make it look like he's being tough. it could work in his favor.
